Guide
from our own experience
🌿 March–April — first shoots, early preventive treatments
Feeding & stimulation
- •Nitroammophoska 16-16-16 — under the root, for NPK balance at the start of vegetation.
- •Radifarm — under the root, to awaken roots after winter.
Protection against pests
- •Entotsid — under the root, protection against soil pests.
Protection against frost and disease
- •Medyanekstra — on the foliage and soil surface around the shoot, prevention of fungal diseases.
- •Quantum AminoFrost — on the foliage, protection against frosts below –3°C.
🌸 May — after night frosts, 3–5 day interval between treatments
Feeding & micronutrients
- •Rycat Start — under the root, growth stimulation at the start.
- •Monopotassium phosphate — foliar, 0.2–0.3%, for bud formation.
- •Brexil Ca + MgSO₄ + Boric acid — foliar, calcium, magnesium and boron for buds.
- •Plantafol 10-54-10 + Isabion — foliar, budding and amino acids.
- •Iron chelate — foliar, as needed, in case of leaf yellowing.
Fungicides - always before the bud opens
- •Signum — foliar, broad spectrum of action.
- •Switch — foliar and at root zone, against botrytis and rots.
Protection against pests
- •Actara — foliar, in the morning, against aphids, before flowering (due to bees).
- •Nematodes — into moist soil, at temperatures above +12°C, against soil pests.
🌸 June — renewal bud formation, interval between treatments 3–5 days
Root fertilisation
- •Wood ash infusion: 10 l of ash in 10 l of water, steep for 24 hours. Before use, dilute 1 l of infusion in 10 l of water. Water at the root, 1–2 l per bush.
Foliar treatment
- •Plantafol Plus 5-15-45 — 25–30 g/10 l water, on dry foliage, in the evening.
Root fertilisation (5 days after Plantafol)
- •Monopotassium phosphate — 10 g/10 l water, together with GumiGold (potassium humate) — 2/3–3/4 tsp per 10 l water, as per package instructions. Water at the root.
🌿 July — support and stability
Foliar treatment (after 2–3 days)
- •Brexil Mix (Mg+Zn) — foliar, as per package instructions.
Repeat root fertilisation (mid-July)
- •Monopotassium phosphate — 10–15 g/10 l water, at the root. Maintaining phosphorus-potassium balance without nitrogen.
Watering
- •The key factor in July. Peonies need stable moisture in the heat — uneven watering (drying out–waterlogging) causes more damage than lack of fertiliser. Water deeply and less often, rather than frequently and shallowly.
🌱 Soil and planting
Erica grows only on acidic, light soil. The optimal mix: high-moor peat (pH 3.0–4.0), coniferous-forest soil, and garden soil in a 2:2:1 ratio.
Sunny areas produce more abundant flowering than partial shade.
💧 Watering
Watering is regular, especially in the heat.
🌿 Mulch
Mulch is a must. Coniferous litter is best: it retains moisture and maintains acidity. An alternative is oak bark.
🌸 Nutrition
Fertilizers for plants with acidic soil (hydrangeas, rhododendrons, etc.). No need for excessive fertilization.
✂️ Pruning
After flowering, usually in August. The shape is spherical or natural, depending on the design of the site.
🌱 Propagation
Bend the shoot to the soil and root it. After a year, the rooted parts are separated and planted separately.
❄️ Winterization
No winter cover needed. Erica keeps its decorative look even under snow and ice.
Key takeaways
- acidic, light soil
- stable, moderate moisture
- sun or light shade
- minimal intervention after planting
